Becoming a Conversational English Volunteer
Thank you for applying to be a volunteer with the Conversational English Program at the Kitchener-Waterloo Multicultural Centre.
Volunteers should:
- Be fluent in both written and spoken English
- Have settled in Canada for at least 2 years.
- Have a minimum of a secondary school diploma
- Have respect for people of diverse cultures and strong interpersonal skills
- Be committed to volunteering 1-2 hours per week for a minimum of four months
- Be able to obtain a Vulnerable Sector Check from the local police services
While we ask that volunteers for this program obtain a Criminal Record & Judicial Matters Check from Waterloo Region Police Services, we recognize that systemic racism and oppression are inherent in our society, including in our police and justice systems.
For that reason, the decision to hire a volunteer or not does not rest solely on the outcome of the record check. Our screening process includes an interview, reference check, an orientation, an agreement form, and submitting the Criminal Record & Judicial Matters Check.
If you are interested in beginning the volunteer process, please tell us a little about yourself on our application form!
